The official languages are Greek in the south and Turkish in the north, but English is widely spoken across the island, especially in tourist areas and hotels. Street signs and menus in the south are often in Greek and English, which helps non-Greek speakers a lot. If you’re venturing into less-touristy villages, a few basic Greek phrases go a long way and locals appreciate the effort. Younger Cypriots and anyone working in tourism almost always speak English well. Learning “please” and “thank you” in Greek (or Turkish if visiting the north) is polite and useful.
