The official languages are Tongan and English, and you’ll hear both depending on where you go. Tongan is the most common in daily life, especially outside of tourist spots. English is widely taught in schools, so many locals can switch between the two. Signs and public info are usually in both languages, which makes it easier for visitors. If you learn a few Tongan phrases, people really appreciate it. The language itself has a Polynesian rhythm and is closely tied to culture and tradition.
