The US government officially entered a shutdown

The Congress failed to pass a funding bill. The deadlock stemmed from disagreements between Democrats and Republicans over healthcare provisions, including the extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies and the reversal of Medicaid cuts.

Approximately 750,000 federal employees are affected, with many furloughed and others required to work without pay. Essential services such as military operations, Social Security, and mail delivery will continue, though some employees may go unpaid.

The shutdown is the first since the 2018–2019 closure and arises amid ongoing political tensions. Republicans accuse Democrats of partisan obstruction, while Democrats criticize Republicans' inadequate healthcare provisions.

Federal agencies are being instructed to operate based on the president’s budget rather than law, deepening political tensions.

The shutdown leaves large segments of the government suspended, including the EPA, NIH, and federal museums, while national parks will remain partially open via visitor fees.

The Trump administration has indicated it may conduct firings if the political impasse persists. Republicans plan to reintroduce the funding measures, hoping Democrats might reconsider.
