Papua New Guinea is one of the most linguistically diverse countries on Earth, with over 800 languages spoken. Tok Pisin, Hiri Motu, and English are the main official languages used for government and business. Most people in villages speak their own local language, which can be completely different from neighboring communities. Learning a few phrases in Tok Pisin will go a long way and is usually appreciated by locals. Even simple greetings open doors to conversations and cultural exchange. Language reflects the strong tribal identity and the history of each group. It’s fascinating to realize how communication shifts just a few kilometers across the country.
