What’s the history behind the name “Neyland Stadium”?

The stadium is named after General Robert Neyland, who coached the Tennessee Volunteers and basically built the team’s national reputation. He started coaching in the 1920s and led the Vols to multiple undefeated seasons, shaping their defensive-minded playing style. Under Neyland, Tennessee became a powerhouse in college football, and his influence is still felt in the program’s culture today. The “Neyland Maxims,” a set of coaching principles, are still quoted before games as part of the team’s tradition. Naming the stadium after him was a way of honoring the man who made Tennessee football a respected name nationwide. You’ll see his statue outside the stadium and references to his philosophy all over the place. He’s more than just a coach — he’s part of the stadium’s DNA.
