Cameroon has two official languages — French and English — but that’s just the start. Across the country, you’ll hear hundreds of local languages and dialects from its many ethnic groups. In the north, Fulfulde and Hausa are common, while the central and southern regions have Bantu languages like Ewondo and Duala. Most people mix languages in daily life, switching between English, French, and their native tongue depending on who they’re talking to. This linguistic diversity is part of the country’s identity and sometimes even shows up in music and slang. English is stronger in the western regions, while French dominates in the east. Visitors who learn a few words in both languages get lots of smiles and friendly reactions.
