The official language in Belize is English, making it unique in Central America. However, many people also speak Spanish, especially near the border with Mexico and Guatemala. There’s also a local Creole language used in everyday conversation. Mayan languages are still spoken in some communities, reflecting the country’s indigenous heritage. English is used in schools, government, and media, so visitors usually get by easily. Knowing a few local phrases or greetings in Creole can be fun and appreciated. Belize’s languages show its mix of cultures and colonial history.
