The official language in Cambodia is Khmer. It has its own unique script and sound, making it quite different from neighboring languages. Khmer is used in schools, government, and media throughout the country. English is becoming more common, especially in Phnom Penh and tourist areas. In rural regions, you might also hear local dialects or even a little French from older generations. Learning some simple Khmer phrases can make interactions with locals much more personal. The language is central to Cambodia’s culture, traditions, and national pride.
