The official language in China is Mandarin Chinese, also known as Putonghua. It’s based on the Beijing dialect and is spoken by most people across the country. However, there are many regional languages and dialects, like Cantonese, Shanghainese, and Hokkien. In major cities, you’ll find that many younger people also speak some English, especially in business and tourism. Mandarin uses Chinese characters, which can be challenging but fascinating to learn. Knowing a few basic Mandarin phrases can be really helpful when traveling. The country’s linguistic diversity reflects its huge size and ancient culture.
