The Comoros Islands have three official languages: Comorian, Arabic, and French. Comorian, or Shikomori, is the most widely spoken and is related to Swahili. Arabic is used in religion, while French is used in education and government. Many people are multilingual, easily switching between the three languages. English is not common, but it’s slowly growing in use among younger generations. Visitors who know a little French will get along just fine. The mix of languages reflects the islands’ African, Arab, and French influences.
