The official language in Costa Rica is Spanish. It’s spoken everywhere, though the local accent is smooth and easy to understand. English is also widely taught in schools and used in tourism, especially along the coasts. Some indigenous languages, like Bribri and Cabécar, are still spoken in small communities. Most Costa Ricans, or “Ticos,” are friendly and appreciate when visitors try a few Spanish words. Street signs, menus, and public info are almost always in Spanish. The language adds to the country’s laid-back and welcoming atmosphere.
