The Central African Republic has two official languages: French and Sango. French is used in schools, government, and formal communication. Sango, which started as a trade language, is spoken by almost everyone as a common tongue. Most locals are bilingual, using Sango in daily life and French for official purposes. In rural areas, you might also hear other regional languages. English is rare, so some French knowledge goes a long way for travelers. The blend of languages reflects the country’s unity among many ethnic groups.
