The official language in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is French. It’s used for administration, education, and media across this vast country. Four national languages—Lingala, Swahili, Kikongo, and Tshiluba—are also widely spoken. Many Congolese people are multilingual, switching easily between French and local languages. English is becoming more common in business and among younger generations. Knowing some French or Lingala can be very useful for travelers. The mix of languages reflects the country’s size, diversity, and rich cultural heritage.
