Djibouti has two official languages: French and Arabic. French is used in government, education, and business, while Arabic is common in religion and culture. Many locals also speak Somali and Afar as their native languages. English is becoming more popular, especially among young people. Most Djiboutians are multilingual and switch easily between languages depending on the situation. Knowing a few words in French or Arabic can be very helpful when visiting. The mix of languages highlights Djibouti’s location as a crossroads of Africa and the Middle East.
