The official language in Ecuador is Spanish. It’s spoken everywhere, though the accent and expressions vary from the mountains to the coast. Indigenous languages like Quechua and Shuar are also recognized and used by native communities. English is taught in schools and used in tourist areas, especially in Quito and the Galápagos Islands. Most Ecuadorians are friendly and appreciate when visitors try a few Spanish words. The mix of languages shows the country’s blend of history and cultures. Spanish remains the key to connecting with everyday life in Ecuador.
