Mathieu Betts named CFL’s top defensive player for 2025 season

Mathieu Betts of the BC Lions captured the CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award on 13 November 2025, continuing his dominant performance in Canadian football. Betts posted a league-leading 15 sacks this season, along with 42 tackles, four forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Voted on by all nine CFL head coaches and members of the Football Reporters of Canada, the award underscores his status as one of the game’s elite defenders. This marks his second time winning the honour — he previously took the trophy in 2023. With this recognition, Betts solidifies his position as a cornerstone of the Lions’ defence and a rising star in the CFL’s international profile.
