Lincoln’s political career kicked off in Illinois, where he first ran for state office in his twenties. He didn’t win the first time, but he kept at it and eventually became a state legislator. His skills as a lawyer and his clear way of explaining issues helped him gain attention. Later he served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives. When debates over slavery heated up, his speeches really put him on the national map. The famous Lincoln-Douglas debates got people talking about him across the country. From there, his rise to the presidency happened surprisingly fast.
