Adams was one of the best diplomats the U.S. ever had. He negotiated the Treaty of Ghent, which ended the War of 1812. He also worked on the Adams–Onís Treaty that secured Florida for the United States. As secretary of state, he helped shape the Monroe Doctrine. Adams believed in strengthening America through smart diplomacy rather than constant conflict. His foreign policy skills earned him huge respect. Some people say his pre-presidential career was more impressive than his presidency.
