Lincoln had less than a year of formal schooling spread across his childhood, but he made up for it with nonstop self-study. He read every book he could find, from biographies to law texts. Neighbors remembered him carrying a book while doing chores and studying by firelight. Teaching himself the law is how he became a lawyer, which was a big deal at the time. His curiosity pushed him into politics and public speaking. Lincoln loved learning new ideas and debating issues, which made him a strong thinker. His self-driven education is a big part of his legend.
