What happened to Franklin Pierce after leaving the presidency?

After leaving office, Pierce retired to New Hampshire and lived a relatively quiet life, although he stayed involved in Democratic politics. He traveled, gave speeches, and wrote letters defending his policies. Pierce’s reputation never recovered, and he was criticized heavily by both historians and his contemporaries. He stayed loyal to the Democratic Party but never ran for office again. His later years were more reflective and private compared to his public life. Despite the criticism, he remained engaged in national discussions and corresponded with political figures. He died in 1869, a few years after the Civil War reshaped the country he once led.
