After leaving office, Buchanan went back to Pennsylvania and stayed mostly out of national politics. He wrote a long defense of his presidency because he wanted to explain his decisions and clear his name. He lived a quiet life on his estate, occasionally hosting visitors and discussing politics privately. Buchanan stayed loyal to the Union even during the war, though many Republicans still blamed him for the mess. He spent his later years focused on writing, charity, and supporting local causes. While he never changed public opinion much, he still tried to justify himself. He died in 1868, just a few years after the Civil War ended.
