What was Fillmore’s role in the Compromise of 1850?

Fillmore supported the Compromise of 1850 as a way to keep the nation from breaking apart over slavery disputes. He felt like the country needed a temporary peace, even if the deal wasn’t perfect. The compromise brought California in as a free state and created a stricter Fugitive Slave Act, which stirred up a lot of anger. Fillmore thought it was the only way to lower tensions, but it ended up hurting his reputation with both sides. Supporters said he stopped chaos; critics said he made things worse. Either way, it changed his political career big time. It’s probably the thing he's most tied to now.
