Pierce was born in New Hampshire to a family of English descent, and his father was a well-known politician and judge. Growing up in a fairly wealthy household gave him opportunities most kids didn’t have in early 1800s New England. He studied at Bowdoin College, where he met future president Nathaniel Hawthorne, who became a lifelong friend. His New England upbringing influenced his style—polite, formal, and disciplined.
