What was Franklin Pierce’s background and ethnicity?

Pierce was born in New Hampshire to a family of English descent, and his father was a well-known politician and judge. Growing up in a fairly wealthy household gave him opportunities most kids didn’t have in early 1800s New England. He studied at Bowdoin College, where he met future president Nathaniel Hawthorne, who became a lifelong friend. His New England upbringing influenced his style—polite, formal, and disciplined. Even though he came from privilege, Pierce had a bit of a quiet, unassuming personality. He combined that elite background with a frontier-style military career later on. That mix shaped him as both a politician and a leader.
