Buchanan never married, which makes him the only lifelong bachelor president in U.S. history. He did get engaged once, but his fiancée died suddenly, and he never pursued another relationship. He lived with his niece Harriet Lane for many years, and she basically served as First Lady and handled White House social events. Friends described him as polite, formal, and a bit old-school in his manners. He enjoyed reading, big dinners, and political discussions more than anything else. Some people thought he was distant, but others said he was warm in private. His personal life was unique compared to other presidents.
