Van Buren was born in Kinderhook, New York, in a small Dutch-speaking community. His parents were of Dutch ancestry, making him the only president whose first language wasn’t English. Growing up in a tavern owned by his family exposed him to politics early because travelers and locals debated everything there. He came from pretty modest beginnings and didn’t have the elite education many early presidents had. Instead, he studied law through apprenticeships and worked his way up through determination. People liked that he represented an everyday American success story. His roots always stayed part of his public identity.
