John Tyler was the 10th president of the United States, and he’s best known for being the first vice president to suddenly become president after his predecessor died. When William Henry Harrison passed away just a month into his term, Tyler stepped in and basically forced the country to accept that the vice president becomes full president, not just a temporary placeholder. This move shaped how presidential succession works even today. Even though he wasn’t super popular with his own party, he still made some big calls that pushed the government forward. Tyler had a long political career before reaching the White House, so he wasn’t new to leadership. He’s one of those presidents people don’t talk about a ton, but he made a bigger impact than many realize. His presidency helped stabilize how the U.S. deals with sudden transitions of power.
