Why did James K. Polk only serve one term?

Polk promised the country he’d serve just one term, and surprisingly, he actually stuck with it. He felt that one term was enough to accomplish what he wanted without getting tangled in long political fights. By the end of his presidency, he was completely worn out anyway — the guy worked nonstop. His health took a serious hit, and he didn’t have much energy left for another run. In a way, ending after one term helped cement his image as a president who kept his word. Sadly, he didn’t live long after leaving office, which makes that decision feel even heavier today.
