Why is Andrew Johnson such a controversial president?

Johnson is controversial because of how he handled Reconstruction after the Civil War. He clashed constantly with Congress about how to bring the Southern states back into the Union. Many people felt he was too soft on former Confederates and too slow to support rights for newly freed Black Americans. His stubborn personality didn’t help, and he often refused to compromise. Things got so tense that he became the first president ever impeached by the House. Even though he was acquitted, his presidency stayed rocky until the end. Historians still debate whether he slowed national progress or just got overwhelmed.
