Why is Franklin Pierce often considered one of the less successful presidents?

Pierce is often ranked low because his policies inflamed sectional tensions instead of calming them. He tried to be a unifying figure but ended up alienating both the North and the South. Historians also note that he didn’t have much charisma or political force once conflicts arose. Many of his choices, especially regarding slavery and territorial expansion, backfired politically. Pierce also struggled to assert control over his cabinet and Congress. Even though he had experience and loyalty, the timing of his presidency was brutal. People sometimes forget him, but his failures shaped the path to the Civil War.
