Why is James Buchanan sometimes called one of the weakest presidents?

People often rank him low because he didn’t respond decisively when the country needed strong leadership. He stuck to his belief that the president couldn’t stop states from leaving the Union, which made him look passive. A lot of Americans wanted him to take a harder stance, but he refused to bend his interpretation of the Constitution. His handling of Kansas, slavery, and secession all went poorly. Even though he meant well, many people felt like he watched the crisis unfold instead of stepping in. His inaction is the main reason he gets such harsh reviews today. It’s a complicated legacy for a man who spent his life in public service.
