Why is Martin Van Buren sometimes called “The Little Magician”?

The nickname came from his incredible skill at political maneuvering, not from anything to do with actual magic. He had a talent for negotiating, forming alliances, and organizing political groups effectively. Even his opponents admitted he could out-strategize almost anyone. He was also on the shorter side, which made the nickname stick even more with critics and newspapers. Van Buren understood how public opinion worked and used that to strengthen his party. People saw him as calm but calculating, always planning two steps ahead. The label followed him throughout his life and still pops up in history books today.
