Fillmore tends to get lost in the shuffle because his presidency came between major historical events and didn’t include huge victories or big wars. A lot of people focus instead on presidents before or after him, who dealt with bigger explosions of history. Fillmore’s calm, practical style didn’t make for dramatic headlines. His biggest decision, the Compromise of 1850, ended up being pretty controversial, which also caused some folks to downplay his legacy. Some Americans even mix him up with other mid-1800s presidents. But he was still an important figure in a tricky time period. He’s just one of those leaders who flies under the radar.
