The official currency of The Gambia is the Gambian dalasi, abbreviated as GMD. The dalasi is used for all everyday transactions within the country, including food, transport, services and accommodation. Visitors often exchange foreign currency into dalasi upon arrival, as cash is widely used and accepted. Major hotels and tourist facilities may accept credit cards, but local markets and smaller vendors typically operate on a cash basis. Exchange rates can fluctuate, so it’s wise to check the current rate before travel or conversion. ATMs are available in larger towns, especially around Banjul and tourist areas. Understanding local currency helps travellers budget and pay for goods more conveniently.
