What religion is practised in The Gambia?

The majority of people in The Gambia practise Islam, which is deeply embedded in the nation’s culture and traditions. Most Gambians are Sunni Muslims, and Islamic customs influence social life, festivals and community events. There is also a small Christian minority and a tiny number of practitioners of indigenous traditional beliefs. Religious tolerance is generally strong, and different communities coexist peacefully. Islamic holidays such as Eid al‑Fitr and Eid al‑Adha are widely observed across the country. Churches and mosques stand alongside each other in urban and rural areas. Religion plays a significant role in daily life but coexists with Gambian cultural practices.
