The capital and largest city of Uganda is Kampala. It is the political, economic and cultural heart of the country, home to national government institutions and major businesses. Kampala is situated on several hills close to the northern shores of Lake Victoria, making it a vibrant and scenic urban centre. With a population of around 1.8 million people in the city proper, it also forms a much larger metropolitan area. The city’s rapid growth reflects broader demographic trends across Uganda’s urban centres. Kampala offers a mix of markets, parks, museums and historic sites. It also serves as a hub for transport connections to other parts of Uganda.
