Uganda’s economy is diverse, with agriculture playing a foundational role in employment and trade. Coffee is one of its most important export crops, making Uganda one of Africa’s top coffee producers. Other agricultural products such as tea, tobacco, cotton and various fruits and vegetables also contribute significantly to rural livelihoods and exports. Services, including tourism, have grown in importance, attracting investment and supporting jobs across the country. Uganda is also developing sectors such as manufacturing and energy, including plans for commercial oil production in western regions. Infrastructure development and greater regional trade integration support economic growth. However, many Ugandans remain engaged in subsistence farming and rural economic activity.
