The capital of Turkey is Ankara, located in the central part of the country. Ankara became the capital in 1923 after the founding of the Republic of Turkey, replacing Istanbul for political and administrative reasons. The city is home to the Turkish Grand National Assembly and many government offices. Ankara is smaller than Istanbul but serves as an important political and educational centre. It has several universities, museums, cultural institutions and historic sites. The city experiences hot summers and cold winters due to its inland location. Visitors often pass through Ankara when travelling to other regions of Turkey.
