Turkey has a population of approximately 85 million people, making it one of the most populous countries in the region. A large proportion of the population lives in urban areas, particularly in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Istanbul is the largest city and an economic and cultural hub. Turkey has a mix of ethnic groups, with the majority being Turks and a significant Kurdish minority. Other smaller communities include Arabs, Armenians, Greeks and others. The population is relatively young, with a substantial proportion under 30 years old. Urbanisation and migration patterns influence the distribution of people across the country.
