Greenland has a small population of around 56,000 residents, making it one of the least densely populated territories on Earth. Most residents live in coastal towns and settlements, with the majority concentrated in the west of the island. Nuuk, the capital, has nearly 20,000 inhabitants and is the cultural and economic hub. Other towns like Sisimiut and Ilulissat also contribute to the country’s modest urban centres. The population reflects a strong Inuit heritage, with Greenlandic (Kalaallisut) widely spoken alongside Danish. Life in Greenland involves close-knit communities where traditional practices like hunting remain significant. Despite its vast area, the population remains small because of the extreme Arctic climate and challenging living conditions.
