Guinea-Bissau’s economy is one of the least developed in the world and remains heavily dependent on agriculture, fishing, and exports of primary commodities. The country is one of the world’s largest producers of cashew nuts, which account for the majority of its export revenues and are critically important to rural livelihoods. Agriculture employs the majority of the population but is vulnerable to global price fluctuations and limited infrastructure. Subsistence farming and barter trade are common in rural areas where cash income is limited. Guinea-Bissau has significant potential in resources such as phosphates, bauxite, and offshore oil, but exploitation has been limited. Political instability, weak governance, and inadequate infrastructure have hindered sustained economic growth. Efforts to attract investment and diversify the economy continue in hopes of improving long-term development.
