Guinea-Bissau is a small coastal country in West Africa, bordered by Senegal to the north, Guinea to the south and east, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It covers an area of about 36,125 square kilometres and has a largely low-lying terrain with estuaries and savanna landscapes. The capital and largest city is Bissau, which serves as the political, economic, and cultural centre of the nation. Portuguese is the official language, reflecting its colonial history, but many people also speak Guinea-Bissau Creole (Kriol) and various indigenous languages. The country’s population is around 1.6–2.2 million people, making it one of Africa’s smaller nations by population. Its tropical climate features a rainy season from June to November and a dry season influenced by harmattan winds. Guinea-Bissau’s location and cultural mix make it a unique and diverse part of the West African region.
