Alcatraz Island is a small, rocky island in San Francisco Bay that’s most famous for its history as a high-security federal prison known as “The Rock.” From 1934 to 1963, it held some of the most notorious criminals in U.S. history, including mobsters and escape-risk prisoners, making it a big part of pop culture and true-crime stories. The prison’s isolated location and strong currents made it seem nearly impossible to escape, though attempts and myths around escapes still fascinate people today. Before it was a federal prison, the island served as a military fort and military prison, adding layers to its story. After the prison closed, Alcatraz became part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and now draws visitors from all over the world each year. Today you can walk through the old cellhouse, learn about prison life, and enjoy incredible views of San Francisco and the Bay.
