A visit to Alcatraz Island usually takes a few hours, so plan to spend at least half a day exploring the historic site. After the ferry docks, you’ll walk or take a shuttle up to the old prison building, where the award-winning audio tour helps you explore at your own pace. There are ranger talks, exhibits, and outdoor areas like the old gardens that show a different side of island life beyond the prison walls. You’ll see parts of the cellblock, dining hall, exercise yard, and even exhibits about Native American occupation of the island in 1969. The views back toward San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay are some of the best photo-ops on any Bay tour. Be aware that food and drinks aren’t sold on the island itself, so many visitors eat before or after their trip. Ferries run back to the mainland every half hour, so you have flexibility on when you return.
