What should I know about weather and walking conditions at Alcatraz?

The weather on Alcatraz Island can be unpredictable, with fog, wind, and chilly temperatures even on sunny Bay Area days, so dressing in layers is a good idea. You’ll walk uphill from the dock to the prison — about a quarter-mile with elevation gain — so wearing comfortable shoes makes the visit a lot easier. Parts of the island are uneven or sloped, and although there is a shuttle for mobility needs, much of the tour involves walking, so plan accordingly. If you’re sensitive to cold or wind, bring a warm jacket or sweatshirt, especially if you’re on an evening tour or are there in the shoulder seasons. Sunscreen and water are smart additions even if it’s cool, because sun can still be strong out on the open island. Since food isn’t sold on the island and eating is only allowed in designated picnic areas, eating beforehand and packing snacks for after your visit helps keep you comfortable. Checking the weather forecast before you go helps you prepare for whatever conditions you’ll face.
