The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, located near Enerhodar in southeastern Ukraine. It has six reactors and was once a major source of electricity for Ukraine before the war. Since early 2022, the facility has been under Russian military occupation but remains legally owned by Ukraine’s state nuclear company, Energoatom. All six reactors are currently shut down, so the plant isn’t producing electricity like it used to. International monitors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are on site to watch over safety conditions. The plant’s reactors have multiple layers of containment and are designed to be safely cooled even when shut down, but that still requires reliable power. Its situation has become a major focus of international concern because it’s literally a nuclear site in a war zone.
