What role does the IAEA play at the Zaporizhzhia plant?

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, and it has a small team monitoring conditions at the Zaporizhzhia plant. The agency inspects equipment, checks safety systems, and reports back to the international community about the site’s status. It also helps negotiate temporary ceasefires so engineers can repair damaged power lines that are vital for cooling systems. The IAEA continually emphasizes that uninterrupted power and a demilitarized safety zone are crucial for preventing accidents. Its director general has repeatedly called on both Russia and Ukraine to protect the facility and civilians nearby. The agency has no military power but acts as a neutral technical observer to assess risks and propose safeguards. Without its presence, international awareness and pressure to keep the plant safe would be much lower.
