Why was the Great Wall of China built?

People built the Great Wall mainly to defend ancient China’s borders from attacks by northern nomadic tribes. Several Chinese states and later dynasties kept extending and reinforcing it for this purpose over many centuries. It also served as a way to control trade, movement and taxes along the Silk Road. In addition, it was meant to show the strength and unity of the Chinese empire to enemies and allies alike. While most people think of it as a military barrier, it was also a symbol of power and a cultural icon for the Chinese people. Over time, it became a big part of Chinese identity, history and art. Today, its defensive role is long gone, but its historical purpose still fascinates visitors.
