Kherson became one of the first major Ukrainian cities to fall under Russian control early in the 2022 invasion, and it stayed occupied for many months. After fierce fighting and determination from Ukrainian forces, the city was liberated in November 2022 and its flag was raised again. Since liberation, Kherson has remained on the front lines, and civilians live under the threat of constant shelling and drone attacks coming from across the river. These attacks have damaged infrastructure, homes, and daily life and made normal routines dangerous. Many residents have been forced underground or to shelter frequently just to stay safe. Despite the danger and reduced population compared with before the war, those who stay are working to rebuild community life and essential services. Today the situation is still tense, and people keep hoping for lasting peace and security.
