Kherson is a city in southern Ukraine on the right bank of the Dnipro River, not far from where it flows into the Black Sea. It was founded in 1778 as a fortress and shipyard and became an important port and naval base over the years. In the 19th century it grew thanks to shipping and shipbuilding industries that shaped its economy and culture. Today it’s known for its historical monuments, museums, and waterfront views that reflect its multi-century past. Before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kherson was a lively regional center of culture, education, and industry. Its streets once hosted art festivals, music events, and community gatherings that drew visitors from around the region. Despite the war’s impact, Kherson’s roots in trade, culture, and education are still remembered by many.
