Yes, visitors can go inside New York City Hall, but access is a bit limited since it’s an active government building and working space. Free guided tours are offered on certain days, usually Wednesdays at noon and Thursdays at 10 am, and you have to make a reservation ahead of time because tours are limited to about 20 people. On tour you’ll get to see historic rooms like the grand rotunda, the City Council chamber, and the Governor’s Room with its portrait collection and old furnishings. There’s a security checkpoint you’ll go through, so make sure you bring a photo ID for entry. Tours typically take about an hour, and you’ll be on your feet walking and standing most of that time. If you’re with a group, there are special group times on other weekdays that you can book. It’s one of the best free things to do in NYC for history fans.
